Crocodile Eyes
the belly walker
slides into the water, short
legs disappearing
until just his scaly back
stretches behind blinkless eyes
five crocodiles sun
baking, silent, dusty, laze
unmoving, like logs
washed up along the riverbank
with ten eyes poised and ready
at night, one eye shut
dreaming, one eye glowing red
just waiting to strike
some careless prey gets too close
fooled by the croc's dreaming eye
she's so calm, so still
not coiled for the death roll
so why can't I rest
a primitive instinct says
that she has crocodile eyes
