The American Woman, by David L. Hostetler Constricted Existence after "The American Woman" by sculptor David L. Hostetler, found on the campus of Ohio University Epitome of the mid-century ideal: knees pulled together, hands tucked to sides, shoulders curved forward minimizing the space she occupies. No hard elbows to help propel her forward. Slender build, cinched waist, only flat in the areas where flat is most desired. Most importantly, no mouth. A silent extra in society's play. She can keep a house, raise a child, make sure supper is hot and ready at the end of the day, but she must know that speaking life to ideas and knowledge is not a role for this American woman Maybe someday her granddaughter will have better luck.
